Role and Purview of the Dean's Office

Role: Approval

For all new international research, programs and activities involving Yale staff, faculty, postdoc, graduate student or other Yale-appointed personnel, the cognizant Dean or the Dean’s designee, or in the School of Medicine the cognizant Department Chair, must approve the proposed international research, program or activity. Optimally, this approval is obtained before consultation with and review and approval by other university offices. This approval can also be obtained concurrently with the necessary consultation and review and approval by other university offices.

If the proposed international research, program or activity requires the support of multiple university offices, the cognizant Dean or the Dean’s designee, or in the School of Medicine the cognizant Department Chair, may refer the proposed international research, program or activity to the International Operations and Compliance Committee (“IOCC”) for support. The cognizant Dean or the Dean’s designee, or in the School of Medicine the cognizant Department Chair, may also refer the proposed international research, program or activity to the International Research, Program and Activity Committee (“IRPAP Committee”) for consultation, review or approval.
