University College London
The Yale UCL (University College London) Collaborative is a transatlantic research partnership between two world-renowned institutions. UCL is recognized as a global leading university.
The Collaborative launched in 2009 with the initial aim of expanding research and clinical capacity in cardiovascular medicine and has since expanded to numerous other fields. Faculty and students can benefit from access to extensive hospital complexes. Yale researchers gain access to the British healthcare system, the National Health Service (NHS), through UCL’s affiliated hospitals. The diverse healthcare systems provide a wealth of data.
Thanks to UCL and Yale’s close relationship, exchange and research collaboration opportunities are available across many parts of both institutions.
The UCL Exchange Program allows doctoral students from Yale’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences to spend up to one year studying at UCL’s Doctoral school or conducting research under the supervision of a UCL faculty member. The program provides opportunities to secure joint funding for shared initiatives, efficiently utilize the resources of both institutions, and experience a transatlantic cultural exchange.
The University of São Paolo (USP)
The University of São Paolo is one of Latin America’s largest and most prestigious research institutions. Yale and USP have a longstanding connection, providing a bridge for research collaboration across the continent. The strong relationship is fueled by mutual faculty visits and research programs. Students from both institutions have opportunities to investigate research fields ranging from public health to global affairs, through programs including the Fox International Fellowships and the CAPES-Yale BBS program. Such programs offer funding to enable USP and Yale students to pursue graduate study uninhibited by financial restrictions.
Makerere University
Makerere University is Uganda’s largest institution of higher education. Makerere and Yale have enjoyed a strong partnership since 2006; together, the two institutions aim to expand research and clinical capacity in Ugandan public health and medicine. So far, the partnership has made research accomplishments in tuberculosis diagnosis, non-communicable disease treatment, and patient care. This progress is facilitated by funded research exchanges, clinical rotations, and physician training. Scholars from Makerere and Yale mutually benefit from exposure to clinical settings with alternative facilities, thanks to rotations between Mulago and New Haven hospitals, enabling them to gain a global perspective of their field, partake in productive medical research, and experience the culture of another country.
Current research endeavours include the Uganda Initiative for Integrated Management of Non-Communicable Diseases (UINCD), the Makerere University-Yale University Collaboration (MUYU), and the Uganda TB Implementation Research Consortium (U-TIRC).
Tecnologico de Monterrey
Tecnologico de Monterrey is one of the largest and most prestigious universities in Latin America, with one of the leading business schools in the Spanish-speaking world, as well as a formidable school of medicine. Tec de Monterrey is a pioneer in Latin American education, having worked with Yale to implement the RULER system, a Yale research project dedicated to socio-emotional intelligence in young people, in schools around Monterrey.
Yale and Tec de Monterrey have enjoyed a growing partnership, born in the summer of 2005 with the Tec de Monterrey Summer Program at Yale University. Since its inception, over 2,500 students, faculty, staff, and alumni have participated in one of 36 different exchange programs and collaborations between the two universities. Mutual study exchanges, allowing undergraduates to travel between New Haven and Monterrey, enable Yale and Tec students to experience learning in a new cultural environment.
NTNU
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is the largest Norwegian university with a focus on educating Norway’s future engineers, scientists, and technology specialists. The institution also has a strong reputation for industry collaborations in technology, transportation, and energy. NTNU and Yale have been strengthening their relationship since 2014, focusing on research collaboration in medicine. Yale and NTNU’s medical schools are closely connected, their efforts coordinated through remote leadership meetings.
At least 10 joint medical research projects are now underway, including work related to asthma, cancer cells, inflammatory bowel disease, sepsis, and systems neuroscience. In addition to Yale’s world-leading facilities, collaborative research with NTNU has the HUNT Biobank, and the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience, at its disposal. NTNU also provides funding for a few postdocs at Yale every year, facilitating outstanding research without financial barriers.
Central South University, China
Central South University (CSU) is a Chinese university, belonging to the government’s elite group of Double First Class universities. CSU specializes in the medical and health fields, with research supported by its close link to Xiangya Hospital.
Yale and CSU have a longstanding relationship founded upon principles of expanding medical research and clinical capacity in China. These aims are facilitated by regular student exchange and clinical rotation programs, allowing CSU and Yale students to gain exposure to their respective countries’ healthcare systems. Yale and CSU mutually benefit from residency training programs and research ethics projects organized by the two universities in collaboration with the Yale-China Association.
Current collaborations include a medical student exchange program, allowing students of the Xiangya School of Medicine and Yale School of Medicine to participate in clinical rotations, the Chia Family Health Fellowship Program, enabling women in nursing and other health professions to experience professional development at Yale for a 6-month period, and a residency training program for professionals within the Xiangya hospital system.
National University of Singapore
The National University of Singapore (NUS) is one of Yale University’s most significant partners. NUS is consistently ranked among the world’s top institutions, with an outstanding research output across all disciplines. The two institutions have together founded Yale-NUS College, the first liberal arts college in Singapore, and one of the only institutions of its kind in Asia. Yale and NUS share a joint commitment to evolving scholarship across continents, allowing for greater cohesion between systems in a globalizing world.
Building on from the strength of the Yale-NUS College partnership, the National University of Singapore is a member of the Yale Visiting International Students Program (Y-VISP), and a joint five-year degree program has been established with the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies.
The University of Cambridge
The University of Cambridge is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious educational institutions. Founded in 1209, Cambridge maintains an impressive international reputation across all disciplines. Many opportunities for cross-Atlantic research and study are available for both Yale and Cambridge students, including various sources of generous funding for graduate research, networks for facilitating collaboration, and study abroad opportunities for undergraduates.
Yale and Cambridge have a strong partnership founded on enabling global study opportunities for their students. Cambridge is a member of the Fox Fellowship Program, facilitating funded graduate research exchanges between students of Yale and its partners. Yale undergraduates also have the opportunity to join Cambridge as a matriculated student for a semester or a year.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University
Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is a major research university based in Shanghai, founded in 1896. It is one of nine members of the elite C9 League, and a highly renowned institution in China and beyond. Yale and SJTU share a close relationship, aiming to foster research excellence in the biomedical sciences and beyond, through collaborative research centers, dual degrees, and research exchanges. Their efforts hope to improve the quality of biostatistical research and health policy in China, and to train future leaders in translational medicine and health.
Current collaboration and exchange opportunities include the Shanghai Jiao Tong University – Yale University Dual Degree Program in public health, and joint centers for biostatistics, health policy, and immune-metabolic research. These programs and centers facilitate collaborative research, utilizing the outstanding facilities of both universities.
Tsinghua University
Tsinghua is a leading Chinese research university and a member of the elite C9 League, especially renowned for its research in engineering and computer science. Tsinghua and Yale maintain a strong relationship through collaboration spanning most disciplines, including engineering, biological sciences, architecture, and languages. Yale’s graduate and professional schools are home to many Tsinghua graduates, and inter-university study programs are available for students of both universities.
The Tsinghua-Yale Dual Degree Program is a collaboration between the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, and the Tsinghua University School of Environment. The 3-year degree is equally split between the two universities, and graduating students receive a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering. Tsinghua is a participating university in the China Scholarship Council – Yale World Scholars Program, providing funding for study in the Combined Program in Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS) at Yale. Yale undergraduate and graduate students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the Chinese language, participating in a language program at Tsinghua funded by the Richard U. Light Fellowship Program. These programs give Yale and Tsinghua students the opportunity to study a diverse range of subjects from a new cultural perspective.
ETH Zurich
ETH Zurich is a world-renowned Swiss research institution, with a heavy emphasis on technical and scientific subjects. ETH Zurich’s main focus areas lie within medicine (including the development of technologies for prognostics, diagnostics, and therapy, and training and education programs for infrastructure), sustainability (including food security, energy supply, sustainable habitat design, and natural resource handling), manufacturing technologies, and data science and machine learning.
ETH Zurich is an invaluable connection for Yale, given the university’s strong reputation for the sciences, as well as its advanced facilities and infrastructure. These include the FIRST Center for Micro- and Nanoscience, the Functional Genomics Center Zurich (FGCZ), and NEXUS Personalized Health Technologies, providing technological resources for collaboration in translational research projects.
Owing to Yale and ETH Zurich’s close relationship, facilitating research collaborations between faculties is relatively seamless; many Yale faculty members have joined ETH Zurich as Visiting Scholars, Visiting Researchers, and Short-term Visitors across faculties. ETH Zurich lists Yale as an important collaboration partner, particularly within the ETH Zurich Center for Law & Economics, and the Center for Security Studies.
University of Ghana
University of Ghana, founded in 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast, is the oldest and largest institution of higher education in Ghana. In recent years Yale and Ghana have been advancing initiatives to strengthen their relationship. In March 2018 President Salovey and Yale faculty members visited University of Ghana to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Yale Africa Initiative. During the visit, partnerships with the Ghana School of Medicine and the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research were renewed, extending opportunities for University of Ghana and Yale faculty and students to collaborate. University of Ghana is a member of the Fox International Fellowships Program, enabling graduate students from both universities to spend a funded exchange year away from their home institution.
University of Tokyo
The University of Tokyo is a Japanese public research university and one of East Asia’s most prestigious institutions, established in 1877. The university is frequently ranked as one of the top schools in Asia; among its alumni are 17 Prime Ministers and 16 recipients of the Nobel Prize. Yale’s partnership with the University of Tokyo is a fundamental link to the Eastern world, facilitating cultural and intellectual understanding between two global economic giants. Yale students interested in immersing themselves in Japanese culture and global relations can participate in Global Summer Programs and language immersion courses at the University of Tokyo, while Tokyo students can experience life at Yale through these exchange programs. Graduate students of both institutions aiming to conduct impactful research in international relations, politics, public health, or law, can apply for a fully funded research exchange year through the Fox Fellowship Program.
University of Copenhagen
The University of Copenhagen was founded in 1479 and remains the largest university in Denmark today. Copenhagen is a hub for Scandinavian research, home to a plethora of highly specialized laboratories, biobank data, and multidisciplinary research facilities. Yale and Copenhagen are both members of the prestigious International Alliance of Research Universities, making collaboration easier through networking. Copenhagen is a partner of the Fox International Fellowships program, providing funded research exchange between Denmark and Yale in crucial contemporary subjects.
University of Oxford
The University of Oxford is the oldest university in the English-speaking world and remains one of the most globally prestigious institutions to this day. Many Yale undergraduates complete their graduate education at Oxford, and vice versa. As a result of this reciprocal flow, many individual research collaborations across all disciplines are constantly held between faculty members. Yale and Oxford’s membership in the International Alliance of Research Universities facilitates this collaboration and provides undergraduates with the opportunity to experience cross-Atlantic study exchanges.
