The Yale Institute for Global Health (YIGH) Conversation Series features pivotal decision-makers in the world of global health. Co-sponsored by the George Herbert Walker, Jr. Lecture in International Studies at the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale, the series aims to cultivate potential areas of collaboration with leading institutions in global health, connect with audiences around the world and foster dialogue regarding the challenges facing global health and wellbeing.


Conversation Series - 2022-23 Academic Year

Preparing for Future Pandemics and Other Biological Catastrophes

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the critical need to better prepare for future pandemics and other biological threats. During this panel event, we will present and discuss the central elements to an effective response including: building workforce and surveillance capacity; accelerating and expanding R&D and manufacturing for the equitable distribution of vaccines, treatments, and diagnostics; and, establishing the global structures and institutions necessary to rapidly respond.

The panel discussion will be moderated by Saad Omer, Director, Yale Institute for Global Health. Panelists will include: Dr. Wilmot James, Senior Research Scholar, Columbia University; Dr. Elizabeth Cameron, Professor, Brown University School of Public Health; and Dr. Jennifer Nuzzo, Inaugural Director, Brown University School of Public Health Pandemic Center.

Global HIV/AIDS Program Helping in the Fight Against COVID-19’

December 2, 2021

Speaking at an event commemorating World AIDS Day, Angeli Achrekar, acting U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator and Special Representative for Global Health Diplomacy, said the extensive public health infrastructure created through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) over the past 18 years is helping many African countries conduct widespread COVID-19 screening, testing and infection control during the pandemic. Saad Omer, director of YIGH, said PEPFAR’s impact in Africa illustrates how a country’s investment in global health can have far-reaching implications – not only in addressing HIV/AIDS, but other major public health issues as well.

‘Ensuring an Equitable Response to COVID-19 and Beyond’

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, joined the Yale Institute of Global Health this week to discuss the status of COVID-19 and its variants around the world and what needs to be done to manage this and future pandemics. More than 500 people joined the virtual conversation to hear how the WHO works with countries around the world on preparedness and response to not only arrest COVID-19, but other diseases and potential health threats.

‘Higher Education in a Post-COVID World’ 

April 14, 2021

This panel discussion with university presidents featured; Peter Salovey, President of Yale University and the Chris Argyris Professor of Psychology; Elizabeth Bradley, President of Vassar College; and Firoz Rasul, President, Aga Khan University. The conversation shed light on changes they made to ensure there was a healthy, safe atmosphere for students, staff and faculty on their campuses. They also shared their views on the impact the pandemic will have on the future of higher education. The conversation was moderated by Saad Omer, director of the Yale Institute for Global Health.

Introduced by Yale School of Nursing (YSN) Dean Ann Kurth, the conversation was moderated by LaRon Nelson, YSN Associate Dean, Global Affairs and Planetary Health, and Rob Dubrow, Professor of Epidemiology and Faculty Director of the Yale Center on Climate Change and Health.
