In July 2024, a dozen Yale affiliates began their terms on the editorial board of the flagship Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), one of the leading cardiovascular journals worldwide. This collaboration highlights Yale’s leadership in cardiology research, advancing discovery and innovation, and its commitment to improving the health of all people.

Overall, ten members are from Yale’s Department of Internal Medicine’s Section of Cardiovascular Medicine, a program with almost $245 million in active grants supporting multiple research centers and clinical programs. In addition to nearly 300 clinician-investigators, physician-scientists, and staff, the section currently hosts 57 fellows from diverse backgrounds.

Yale’s Harlan Krumholz, MD, SM, FACC, who was named editor-in-chief in December, will lead the new editorial board, setting a vision for the JACC that emphasizes collaboration and innovation. Under his guidance, the editorial board is committed to forging strategic partnerships globally and generating advancements in cardiology.

“These editors will foster a collaborative spirit among the editorial team, authors, reviewers, and JACC staff,” said Krumholz. “Embodying our intent to become an author-centric platform, the editors will engage with authors with the utmost respect, fairness, and kindness.”

As editor-in-chief, Krumholz seeks to enhance dissemination of research, such as through a new partnership with The Lancet, while also reducing submission barriers as the journal seeks to increase its global impact in cardiovascular health.

Krumholz brings a history of creating innovative, accessible platforms for researchers. He co-founded the Yale University Open Data Access Project (YODA), which shares clinical research to advance open science, in addition to co-founding medRxiv, an online archive of health science preprints.

Beyond serving in leadership positions for the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, American Board of Internal Medicine, the National Institutes of Health and others, he is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and a Distinguished Scientist of the American Heart Association. Krumholz’s research contributions have also garnered international recognition, particularly throughout the Asia-Pacific region. He is recognized as one of the most cited researchers worldwide.

At Yale, Krumholz founded the Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE), which publishes over 125 papers annually and currently employs over 130 people across 17 states. As an international leader, CORE collaborates with government, private and professional organizations to improve and expand the quality and effectiveness of care.

Zhenqui Lin, PhD, senior director of healthcare analytics for CORE, and Erica Spatz, MD, MHS, director of the Preventive Cardiovascular Health Program at Yale Heart and Vascular Center, are serving as deputy editors for JACC. Three additional Yale faculty members — Yuan Lu, ScD; Karthik Murugiah, MBSS; and Mitsuaki Sawano, MD, PhD — join JACC’s editorial board as executive associate editors. Five further Yale members — Ji Chen, PhD; Chenxi Huang, PhD; Shu-xia Li, PhD; Yuan Huang, PhD; and Guangyu Tong, PhD; — are serving on the editorial board as statistical editors.

Beyond the editorial board, Eric Velazquez, MD and section chief for Cardiovascular Medicine for Yale School of Medicine, and Carlos Mena, MD and director of the Peripheral Vascular Disease Program, serve as consultants for JACC, contributing valuable insights and expertise to the team.

Sawano and Yuan Lu were also recently appointed to The Lancet Commission on Finding Solutions for the Cardiovascular Disease Burden in the Asia Pacific Region, expanding the presence of Yale Cardiology and a JACC partner in the area.

Yale’s Department of Internal Medicine’s Section of Cardiovascular Medicine houses four other research centers: the Chagas Disease Alliance at Yale (CDAY), the Yale Cardiovascular Research Center (YCVRC), the Yale Cardiovascular Research Group (YCRG) and the Yale Translational Research Imaging Center (Y-TRIC). These research groups bring together scholars across Yale, the country, and continents to innovate medical technology, advance research and improve clinical care.
