President Biden’s U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit builds partnerships
U.S. President Biden hosted leaders from across the African continent in Washington, DC on December 13-15, 2022, for the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit. The purpose of the summit was to demonstrate the United States’ enduring commitment to Africa, and to underscore the importance of U.S.-Africa relations and increase cooperation on shared global priorities. The summit was rooted in the recognition that Africa is a key geopolitical player, one that is shaping our present and will shape our future. The U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit focused on the areas of economic engagement; peace, security, good governance and democracy, human rights, and civil society; food security; the climate crisis; and diaspora ties.
Recognizing the African diaspora as a source of strength, an important component of the Summit’s three-day agenda was the African and Diaspora Young Leaders Forum, held on December 13. It provided a platform for young African and diaspora leaders to discuss pressing challenges. The Forum also featured breakout sessions on higher education, the creative industries, and environmental equity, utilizing the theme ‘Amplifying Voices: Building Partnerships That Last.’
Yale’s Janette Yarwood, Director for Africa and the Middle East in the Office of International Affairs, combined her experience in U.S. Africa policy and background in higher education to serve as moderator for a breakout session of the Forum focused on “Preparing the Future Workforce for Tomorrow’s Careers.” The session explored new educational and professional options in the U.S. and Africa to build the skills necessary for success in a rapidly evolving global professional environment.
