On October 27, leaders of nine top universities in China met over Zoom with Yale officials and faculty to share perspectives on creating innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems on their campuses. Tsinghua University hosted the event, which was the most recent convening of the China-Yale Advanced University Leadership Program, a series of discussions between Yale and its Chinese peers that began in 2004.

Yale President Peter Salovey and Tsinghua President Qiu Yong began the event by greeting participants. Pericles Lewis, Yale’s Vice President for Global Strategy, and Yang Bin, Vice President and Provost of Tsinghua University, co-moderated the event, in which high-level speakers from Chinese universities presented the achievements and challenges associated with advancing innovation and entrepreneurship among their students and faculty.

For Yale, Jon Soderstrom, Strategic Advisor for Technology Transfer and Commercialization, discussed the university’s strategies to promote and support faculty innovation, given an enabling US legal framework. Song Ma, Assistant Professor of Finance at the Yale School of Management, showcased the ways in which Yale, and US universities in general, approach innovation education, both within curricula and extracurricularly.
