Brendan Walsh joins Yale as senior associate provost for global strategy
Brendan Walsh, formerly the director of international affairs in the Provost’s Office at Stanford University, has joined Yale as senior associate provost for global strategy. The Office of International Affairs, Office of International Students and Scholars, and Yale Young Global Scholars will each report to Walsh, who in turn will report to Steven Wilkinson, Vice Provost for Global Strategy.
At Stanford, Walsh’s accomplishments included founding the Stanford Office of International Affairs in 2011 and his involvement in leading the university’s international engagement efforts since that time. He was also instrumental in the launch and management of the Stanford Center at Peking University, as well as negotiations to open the Stanford Center at the Incheon Global Campus in South Korea. He developed Stanford’s International Research Exploration Fund, a proof-of-concept seed funding initiative to incentivize new global partnerships and increase funding for graduate student field research conducted alongside faculty.
In addition to hosting dozens of visiting delegations each year, working with faculty to develop new partnerships, and staffing university committees at Stanford, Walsh also created two university-wide funding portals, for students and faculty, established the university’s International Response Team, and formed Stanford’s first International Academy to prepare all students for their international experiences.
As part of his former role at Stanford, Walsh was also actively involved in the Ivy+ Global meetings, where he was highly regarded by peers for the contribution of his knowledge of global engagement issues, constructive suggestions, and solutions.
Prior to joining Stanford, Walsh served as a senior program officer at the U.S. Department of State, where he implemented two presidential and two congressional initiatives. He earned his Ph.D. in international education from New York University.
Walsh, originally from Old Saybrook, Connecticut, has returned home to the nutmeg state to start his new position at Yale. As he transitions into the role, he will work closely with Don Filer who will continue in an advisory capacity for the academic year following his retirement last spring as associate vice president for global strategy after 24 years at Yale.
In announcing Walsh’s role, Wilkinson said, ”I am grateful to the many individuals who provided input during the search for this position, including Don Filer, whom I thank for his tremendous service to the university. I am looking forward to the energy and extensive knowledge of university global engagement Brendan will bring to our team. I hope you will join me in welcoming him to Yale.“
