The Brazil Club at Yale, which assists Brazilian students in the process of adjusting to Yale and the United States, has launched an innovative and tailored mentorship program for Brazilian students applying to Yale College. Called Yale Dream, it is a free mentorship program that will pair students who wish to apply Early Action or Early Decision to Yale College with one or more Yale College students who will offer support.

This initiative has proven to be important to students when preparing their applications to Yale. Students interested in the program apply in the fall and are in turn evaluated by members of the Brazil Club, who select up to ten candidates. Each candidate is then mentored by a current Yale student, who will advise them throughout the university’s application process, which includes writing necessary essays for admission. Moreover, the selected students will have opportunities to learn from the current Yale College students about daily life at Yale, making their integration into the campus easier.

“We provide them with tips and suggestions when writing their essays, including best practices of the English language. It is not a guarantee that the student will be admitted but there are quite a few people who were mentored by Yale Dream and were successful in their application process,” said Hannah Neves, who was a mentor to a student applying to Yale College last year.

The Brazil Club was created and is maintained by students from Brazil as well as other international students. It aims to enable recently admitted Yale students to have the best possible experience when adapting to a new environment and new ways of life, far from their countries of origin, while meeting classmates from all over the world who are all learning to be away from home.

At Yale, the Brazil Club hosts many cultural activities and events to bring the Brazilian community together. There are many opportunities to become involved.

This was the case for a Brazilian student Bernardo Trevisan, who is currently in his third year at Yale College and is studying Computer Science. In 2018, Bernardo left the city of Porto Alegre, and his experience entering Yale was fairly smooth. “A week after my admission to Yale, I received a message from the Brazil Club. That was when I realized that, regardless of being distant from home, I would have here the support of a community of people concerned with welcoming me in the best possible way,” said Trevisan.

Trevisan’s initial connection with the Brazil Club resulted in an increased engagement with the Brazilian community. Soon after, Trevisan became a co-president of the Brazil Club, and he now serves as an advisor to the organization. He has been very pleased with his experience with the club, and noted, “It’s all about a space where I can talk to my friends, who have experiences similar to mine. And it is also where I can speak Portuguese!”

At Yale, Trevisan has also been involved with the international community through other initiatives such as the La Casa, the Latino Cultural Center, and the Council on Latin American and Iberian Studies (CLAIS). Trevisan was an important part of the annual Brazil Activities Fair hosted by CLAIS in 2019.

Neves, who studies Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at Yale, believes that bringing people closer together is one of the main appeals of the Brazil Club: “We meet once a week, speak in Portuguese, and talk about what is happening on campus. It is very nice to meet people from Brazil and have regular contact with them.”

Neves also noted that together, students can better deal with being away from family. “On certain dates, such as Christmas and Carnaval, we always organize special gatherings. For example, last year, we exchanged gifts and made Brigadeiro. It was a lot of fun!” said Neves.

O Brazil Club at Yale lança programa de mentoria ‘Yale Dream’ para candidatos brasileiros

O Brazil Club at Yale, que auxilia estudantes brasileiros no processo de adaptação à Yale e aos Estados Unidos, lançou um programa de mentoria inovador e personalizado para estudantes brasileiros aplicando para Yale College. Chamado de Yale Dream, é um programa de mentoria gratuito que pareia os alunos que desejam aplicar Early Action ou Early Decision para Yale College com um ou mais alunos do Yale College que oferecerão apoio.

Esta iniciativa provou ser importante para os alunos na preparação de suas aplicações para Yale. Os alunos interessados ​​no programa se inscrevem no outono e, por sua vez, são avaliados pelos membros do Brazil Club, que selecionam até dez candidatos. O Brazil Club foi criado e é mantido por alunos do Brasil, e também por outros alunos internacionais. O seu objetivo é permitir que estudantes recém-admitidos de Yale tenham a melhor experiência possível ao se adaptarem a um novo ambiente e novos modos de vida, longe de seus países de origem, enquanto encontram colegas de classe de todo o mundo que também estão aprendendo a estar longe de casa .

Em Yale, o Brazil Club realiza muitas atividades culturais e eventos para reunir a comunidade brasileira. Existem muitas oportunidades para se envolver.

Foi o caso para o estudante brasileiro Bernardo Trevisan, que está no terceiro ano de Yale College e que estuda Ciência da Computação. Em 2018, Bernardo deixou a cidade de Porto Alegre e sua experiência de transição para Yale foi tranquila. “Uma semana após minha admissão em Yale, recebi uma mensagem do Brazil Club. Foi quando percebi que, mesmo estando longe de casa, teria aqui o apoio de uma comunidade de pessoas preocupadas em me receber da melhor forma forma possível “, disse Trevisan.

A conexão inicial de Trevisan com o Brazil Club resultou em um maior engajamento com a comunidade brasileira. Logo depois, Trevisan tornou-se co-presidente do clube, e agora passou a atuar como assessor da organização. Ele tem sido muito contente com a sua experiência com o clube, e afirmou: “Trata-se de um espaço onde posso falar com os meus amigos, que têm experiências semelhantes à minha. E é também onde posso falar português!”

Em Yale, Trevisan também se envolveu com a comunidade internacional por meio de outras iniciativas, como a La Casa, o Centro Cultural Latino, e o Conselho de Estudos Latino-Americanos e Ibéricos (CLAIS). Trevisan foi uma parte importante da Feira de Atividades do Brasil anual promovida pela CLAIS em 2019.

Neves, que estuda Línguas e Civilizações do Oriente Médio em Yale, acredita que aproximar as pessoas é um dos principais atrativos do Brazil Club: “Nos encontramos uma vez por semana, falamos em português, e conversamos sobre o que está acontecendo no campus. É muito bom conhecer pessoas do Brasil e ter contato regular com elas. ”

Neves lembrou ainda que juntos, os alunos lidam melhor com a distância da família. “Em certas datas, como Natal e Carnaval, sempre fazemos festas especiais. Por exemplo, no ano passado, trocamos presentes e fizemos brigadeiro. Foi muito divertido!” disse Neves.
