The Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies provides eight undergraduate majors: six focused on world regions – African, East Asian, Latin American, Modern Middle East, Russian and East European, and South Asian Studies – and two focused globally – International Studies and Ethnicity, Race, and Migration. At the graduate level, the Center provides four master's degree programs, three regionally focused on African, East Asian, and Russian and East European Studies, and one globally focused on International Relations.

The University has a rich tradition of language teaching, and many of its language and literature departments are regularly ranked among the best in the country. For example, Yale was the first university to offer Sanskrit to its undergraduates, and it has a particularly well-known program in African languages. The Center for Language Study coordinates study in languages ranging from Akkadian to Visayan.
