Yale University.
Calendar. A-Z Index.

The University strongly encourages all members of the University community who are contemplating travel abroad for educational or other purposes to plan well in advance and to take precautions to ensure a safe trip.

Travel preparations

All travelers should do the following as soon as possible:

Health and safety abroad

In addition to web-based information that is provided by the U.S. State Department and various other governments, the University encourages members of the Yale community to consult MEDEX, a private travel emergency assistance provider engaged by Yale to support students, faculty, and staff who are travelling internationally. The MEDEX site provides up-to-date information about travel risks of all kinds.

The Yale University International Travel Policy for Yale College Students states that Yale will not fund, award credit for, or otherwise sponsor or support any international undergraduate academic or extracurricular project in any country or location within a country for which 1) the U.S. State Department has issued a warning that orders departure of U.S. dependents and non-emergency personnel; recommends that U.S. citizens depart the country; advises U.S. citizens against all travel to the country; or recommends that U.S. citizens defer non-essential travel to the country, or 2) the travel assistance organization MEDEX has rated the country a “5” (very high) level threat. This restriction applies through the date of departure. Exceptions are not granted.

Resources

Yale students have a wide range of opportunities to study, conduct research, or undertake internships abroad.

Students should contact their school or program to determine any requirements that apply to them and to identify available resources.

The Student Grants and Fellowships database is a comprehensive, searchable database of grants and fellowships available for scholarly research, formal study, internships, and public service in the United States and around the world.

Undergraduates interested in taking courses abroad should consult with the Center for International Experience and Yale Summer Session Programs. Students in the Graduate and professional schools should consult with their school as well as consider options available through the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies.

For undergraduates, the Office of Undergraduate Career Services provides counsel and reference materials on internships and work opportunities.

Faculty and students who are planning research trips may contact the Yale University Library for assistance on planning and gaining access to libraries and archives around the world.

Undergraduate student organizations are responsible for appointing an officer of the organization to act as the trip leader, and notifying the Yale College International Experience Office of the name of the appointed trip leader. The trip leader should consult Responsibilities of Group Leaders or Trip Sponsors for a list of their responsibilities and a list of available resources. Information for individual travelers provides help with trip planning.

Additional information and resources for faculty, staff, and students who are planning international travel, including trip checklists and links, are available on the travel resources page.
